The Learning Network: Dark Materials: Reflecting on Dystopian Themes in Young Adult Literature

Lesson Plan | Six ways to approach “dark,” post-apocalyptic young adult fiction.

I’m starting to explore The Hunger Games with my ELA 7’s and 8’s. This article adds some gravity to the idea of teaching dystopian literature to children and young adults. It’s true, my students wouldn’t enjoy reading these stories as much if they had endured anything similar to the dystopic symptoms in book: poverty, violence, murder, and manipulation are the stuff of television to most of my gang. The Hunger Games still reads as escapism and adventure to them and I need to find ways to drive the true meaning home.
